Cold
War Tops in North America
Fort Erie,
September 25…Cold War, with jockey Monique
Dionne in the saddle, recorded his ninth win of the season
Sunday by winning the Welland Cup at Fort Erie. Only
one other horse in North America (Longbranch Saloon)
has won nine races in 2006
Cold war was making
his second start in seven days and showed no signs of fatigue.
The five-year-old son of War Deputy opened up a two-length
lead right out of the gate and never looked back. He covered
the one mile and seventy yards in 1:41 1/5 on a track listed
as good.
“He’s
a nice horse to ride,” said jockey Monique Dionne. “He
takes the lead so easy, when we get to the far turn he
hears them coming and he takes off.”
“He’s
a Tiger,” said trainer Vern Fernandes. “He’s
just having fun out there, he loves to run.”
It was the third
Cup win of the season for Cold War. He won the Peace Bridge
Cup August 13 and the St. Catharines Cup one week ago.
He has earned $139,755 so far in 2006 and has banked over
$204,000 with twelve lifetime wins.
For jockey Monique
Dionne, it was her fifth Cup victory this year. Dionne
has been aboard Cold War in all three of his Cup wins.
She also won the Fort Erie Holiday Inn Cup (Lindsay’s
Dove) and the Longshot OTB Cup (Harvest Singing).
Cold War will
get a bit of a rest before making his next start. “I’ll
give him a bit of a break,” said Fernandes. “But
he will be back and we’ll go for the gusto.”
On Saturday, Grab The Cat, with Neil Poznanzky in the irons,
easily won the Turf Writers Cup. It was the second Cup win
of the year for the Daryl Ezra trained runner. He won the
Golden Horseshoe Cup August 12.
