Former Trainer Charles Sammut Passes Away

FORT ERIE, September 16...Former Fort Erie trainer Charles Sammut died Tuesday evening at Greater Niagara General Hospital, he was 61.

Sammut, who was born in Malta in 1948, immigrated to Canada at a very young age. He worked at INCO – Port Colborne Refinery for over 20 years before becoming a trainer at Fort Erie Race Track.

Sammut began his training career in 1985. He trained horses for multiple owners over the years but is best remembered for his own Kerri Lee Stable, named for his daughter.

During his 22 years as trainer, Sammut raced horses primarily in Ontario at Fort Erie and Woodbine.

Sammut is survived by his loving wife Heather, his daughter Kerri (Ed) Tunnacliffe. He is also survived by granddaughter Haley, his pride and joy.

The Sammut family will receive friends at the Port Colborne Chapel of the Davidson Funeral Homes, 135 Clarence St. on Saturday, September 19 from 11:00am. until time of service in the chapel at 1:00pm.

Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario.
