Off and Running at the Fort

FORT ERIE, May 02...Fort Erie opened its 113th season of live racing on Saturday with a track record performance by Cacouna and a three win afternoon for jockey Anthony Stephen.

Cacouna, Fort Erie’s 2009 sprinter of the year, blistered 4 ½ furlongs in a record time of 51.46 over a fast track to win the day’s third race. Veteran rider Chris Griffith was aboard for trainer Nick Gonzalez.

Jockey Anthony Stephen got off to a flying start winning three races on the opening day card. Stephen won the second race aboard Trouble Today ($4.60) for trainer Allen Desruiseaux, the sixth with Tony Adamo trained Golden Sunset ($5.40). He came back to win the seventh on Parwood ($15.00) for trainer David Burns.

Luv a Marine

Luv a Marine winning the first race of the season. Owned by Bruno Schickedanz, trained by Micheak Wright Jr. and ridden by Rui Pimentel.

Jockey Krista Carignan scored a riding double on Saturday. Carignan guided Baby Bear ($11.70) to victory in the fourth for trainer Daryl Ezra and came back to win the fifth aboard Carry Your Diamond ($6.80) who is trained by Lyle Morden.

On Sunday’s card trainer Lisa Cadeddu recorded her first win as a trainer. My Name Is Rachael with Chris Griffith in the irons won the fourth race. Cadeddu, a former rider here at the Fort, started training horses last year and started just ten runners.

In the final race of the afternoon it was Neil Husbands moment to shine. Husbands, who is the nephew jockey Patrick Husbands and trainer Anthony, rode Icy Humour to victory. By the way, Icy Humour is trained by Uncle Anthony.

Melanie Pinto was the only rider to double up on Sunday’s card. Pinto won the second race of the day aboard Up Against It ($11.30) for trainer Robert Griem and came back to win the seventh with Teacher Boyne ($5.30) for trainer Lyle Morden.

Live racing continues on Sunday. For the balance of the racing season the track will offer live racing Sunday through Tuesday. Post time is 1:30pm.
