Queen's
Plate Winner Sets Sights on Prince of Wales
Fort Erie,
July 18...This year’s Queen’s Plate winner, Big Red Mike,
had his final tune up for the second jewel in Canada’s
Triple Crown on Friday July 16th. Trained by Fort Erie resident,
Nick Gonzalez, the handsome chestnut worked five furlongs
over the dirt training track at Woodbine in a quick 58.2
for jockey Eurico Rosa da Silva. Assistant trainer, Martha
Gonzalez, was very pleased with the gelding’s workout: “He
breezed really well, even better than it looked. Da Silva
just had to chirp to him and he jumped on the bridle.”
The new face to
the Triple Crown is Mobil Unit, who worked over the same
surface on Saturday. The son of Mobil covered six furlongs
in 1:12 flat. Owned by Gus Schickendanz and trained by
Mike Keogh, he’ll be ridden in the Prince
of Wales by David Clark.
Several prospective Prince of Wales starters had a chance
to work over the dirt surface at Fort Erie Race Track on
Sunday, including Captain Canuck (59.4), Who We Gunna Call
(1:02.1) and Golden Moka (1:25.1)
Woodbine’s training track was also busy on Sunday
as several horses had their final works before the Wales.
Sam-Son Farm’s sent out Dark Cloud Dancer and Hotep.
The latter placed in the Queen’s Plate. Dark Cloud
Dancer worked 5 furlongs in 1:00.4 and Hotep worked in a
snappy 59.4.
The Prince of Wales Stakes will be run at Fort Erie Racetrack
on Sunday, July 25th. Post time for the Wales is scheduled
for 5:00 pm.
Parking and Admission is always free.
